Author :Vemula Vijaya Vani, Sanjay Kumar Chak

Article Citation :Vemula Vijaya Vani ,Sanjay Kumar Chak , (2016 ) " A Review on Electro Chemical Discharge Machining (ECDM) of Al-Based Metal Matrix Composites (MMC) " , International Journal of Mechanical and Production Engineering (IJMPE) , pp. 128-134, Volume-4,Issue-8

Abstract : Composite materials are gaining their demand due to their attractive properties. Conventional machining of composites is difficult because of the presence of hard reinforcement particles which causes high tool wear, particle pullout, tool breakage etc. and is greatly affected by the reinforcement percentage in metal matrix composites (MMC). To overcome these problems more research is going on unconventional machining methods of MMC. Electric Discharge Machining (EDM), Electro Chemical Machining (ECM) and Electro Chemical Discharge Machining (ECDM) have been reviewed in this paper to understand the process capabilities and the limitations associated with each of the process while dealing with aluminium MMC. Keywords— Metal Matrix Composites (MMC), Electro Discharge Machining (EDM), Electro Chemical Machining (ECM), Electro-Chemical Discharge Machining (ECDM), Material Removal Rate (MMR), Tool Wear Rate (TWR) and Surface Roughness (SR).
