Abstract : This paper is an appraisal of shear capacities as predicted, for RC beam-column connection, by different national
codes. EN-1998:2004[12], ACI 318:2014[1], NZS 3101:200633], IS 13920:2016[20], CSA A23:2004[8] and AIJ 2010[4]
provisions for shear capacity of connections are evaluated and discussed. Experimental data of forty-eight exterior columnbeam
connections, failed essentially in connection shear, as reported in literature is compiled. Comparison between
experimental results and code predictions is presented. Reliability and accuracy of the code-based predictions quantified
through different statistical indices with reference to experimental data is established. Generally, it is observed that code
provisions lead to considerable scatter in results and most of the codes overestimate the connection shear strengths. To
mitigate this error a simple proposal based on principal tensile stress concept is presented. Efficacy of the proposed model is
established with the Average Absolute Error (AAR) index. The proposed model may be adopted by codes to realistically
predict the connection shear capacity.
